How Does a Chiller Cooling System Work?

A chiller cooling system removes heat from water through a refrigerant evaporation–condensation cycle. The chilled water is sent to the process and the warmed return water is cooled again. Air-cooled chillers reject heat to the air with fans; water-cooled chillers reject it via water/cooling tower.

A chiller is an industrial cooling unit that cools water or a fluid and delivers it to a process. It is widely used to cool machines and production lines.

A chiller cooling system removes heat from water through a refrigerant evaporation–condensation cycle; the chilled water is sent to the process and returns to be cooled again.

An air-cooled chiller rejects heat to the air with fans and is easy to install. A water-cooled chiller rejects heat via water/tower and is more efficient at high capacities.

It depends on capacity, ambient conditions and water availability. With no water source, choose an air-cooled chiller; for high, continuous loads, a water-cooled chiller.

Chillers are used wherever process cooling is needed — plastics, food, chemicals, textiles, packaging and healthcare.

Chiller capacity is calculated from the process heat load, target water temperature and flow rate. Engineering support is recommended for the right selection.
