What is Chiller Cooling?

Required in a wide range of applications from industrial production facilities to large commercial buildings, chiller cooling systems are advanced air conditioning and cooling units that lower the temperature of an environment or process by essentially cooling water or a different heat transfer fluid. These systems are also referred to as industrial cooling units. Using chiller devices is critical for preventing overheating in production lines, extending machine life, and maintaining standard product quality.

How Do Chiller Cooling Systems Work?

Chiller cooling systems operate on the logic of phase change and heat transfer, which are among the fundamental principles of thermodynamics. The refrigerant (gas) circulating within the system passes through different pressure and temperature phases, absorbing heat from the environment or water and expelling it outside. A typical chiller system consists of four main components:

  • Compressor: The heart of the system, this component compresses the refrigerant, increasing its pressure and temperature.
  • Condenser: The section where the high-temperature and high-pressure gas coming from the compressor transfers its heat to the external environment (air or water) and turns into a liquid.
  • Expansion Valve: The control element that suddenly drops the pressure of the liquid refrigerant, allowing it to cool rapidly.
  • Evaporator: The point where the cooled fluid absorbs heat from the system (process water), turns back into a gas, and where the cooling process actually takes place.

What Are the Types of Chillers?

Chiller systems are basically divided into two main categories depending on how heat is expelled in the condenser section. The physical conditions of the facility, access to water resources, and energy efficiency goals directly influence this choice.

Air-Cooled Chiller Systems

In air-cooled chiller units, the heat in the condenser is expelled directly into the atmosphere with the help of fans. They are relatively easier to install and do not require an extra cooling tower. They are an ideal solution especially for facilities where water resources are limited, water costs are high, or there is sufficient space outdoors (roof, garden, etc.).

Water-Cooled Chiller Systems

In water-cooled chiller units, the heat in the condenser is expelled using water via a cooling tower. These systems generally provide higher energy efficiency compared to air-cooled models and can be installed indoors (in mechanical rooms). They are frequently preferred for large-capacity industrial facilities and projects requiring high cooling loads.

Application Areas and Industrial Uses

Chiller cooling units have a very wide range of applications in both comfort air conditioning (HVAC) and industrial process cooling. Keeping the machines in the facilities and the manufactured products at the ideal temperature directly increases production efficiency. The main application areas are:

  • Plastic and Rubber Industry: Rapid cooling of molds in injection and extrusion machines.
  • Metal and Machinery Industry: Cooling of CNC machines, laser cutting machines, and welding presses.
  • Food and Beverage Sector: Milk pasteurization, beverage filling lines, and cold storage rooms.
  • Chemical and Pharmaceutical Industry: Maintaining precise reaction temperatures and laboratory applications.
  • Commercial Buildings: Air conditioning of hospitals, shopping malls, hotels, and data centers.

Advantages Provided by Chiller Systems

Using a chiller system of the right capacity and quality in your facility offers many advantages in the long run. Uninterrupted process cooling minimizes downtime on the production line. In addition, since it provides closed-loop water circulation, it significantly reduces water consumption, offering an environmentally friendly approach. Thanks to new generation compressor and automation technologies, energy consumption is optimized, which provides a significant decrease in operating costs.
