From industrial facilities to commercial buildings, food storage areas to precision process cooling applications, heat transfer plays a critical role wherever there is a need for air conditioning and cooling. At the center of this heat transfer is the cooling coil (chilled water coil or evaporator coil). By absorbing the warm air in the environment and reducing it to the desired temperature values, these components directly affect the efficiency of cooling systems.
At Aref Soğutma, with our engineering and manufacturing strength in chiller systems and process cooling solutions, we ensure that your systems operate at peak performance. In this article, we will detail what cooling coils are, how they work, and why choosing the right coil is of vital importance in industrial cooling projects.
What is a Cooling Coil?
A cooling coil is a heat exchanger through which a cooling fluid (chilled water, water-glycol mixture, or direct expansion refrigerant gas) passes, typically consisting of copper tubes and aluminum fins arranged around these tubes. Its main purpose is to cool the air and dehumidify it by absorbing the heat of the warm air passed over it with the help of a fan.
Types of Cooling Coils
Based on the type of cooling fluid used, cooling coils are fundamentally divided into two categories:
- Chilled Water Coils: These are coils through which water or a water-glycol mixture cooled by chiller units passes. They are widely used in central air conditioning systems and air handling units (AHU).
- DX (Direct Expansion) Coils: These are coils through which refrigerant gas (Freon, etc.) passes directly, acting as an evaporator. As the gas changes from a liquid to a gaseous state within the coil, it absorbs the heat of the environment.
Working Principle: How Does Heat Transfer Occur?
The working principle of a cooling coil is based on the fundamental laws of thermodynamics and heat transfer rules. The process works as follows:
- Fluid Entry: The low-temperature fluid (water or gas) coming from the chiller or cooling unit enters the tubes through the coil's header.
- Airflow: With the help of a fan or blower, the warm air of the environment to be cooled is passed over the fins of the coil.
- Heat Exchange: When the warm air comes into contact with the cold copper tubes and aluminum fins, it transfers its heat to the coil. During this time, the fluid inside the tubes warms up, while the air passing over them cools down.
- Dehumidification (Condensation): When the air temperature drops below the dew point, the water vapor in the air condenses on the coil surface and turns into a liquid. This water is removed from the system via a drain pan.
- Distribution of Cold Air: The cooled and dehumidified air is sent to the target environment through ducts or direct blowing.
Considerations for Selecting a Cooling Coil
To achieve maximum efficiency in industrial cooling systems, coil selection must be made with a project-specific engineering approach. At Aref Soğutma, we meticulously evaluate the following criteria in every project:
- Capacity and Heat Load: The total heat gain of the area or process to be cooled must be calculated, and the sensible and latent cooling capacity of the coil must be suitable for this load.
- Material Selection: While copper tubes and aluminum fins are preferred in standard applications, epoxy-coated fins or completely stainless steel/copper fins should be used in corrosive environments.
- Fin Spacing: The distance between the fins should be determined according to the dust and humidity conditions of the environment. In low-temperature and high-humidity environments, fin spacing should be kept wider against the risk of frosting.
- Air Velocity and Pressure Drop: The velocity of the air passing over the coil must be at a level that prevents condensed water from being carried into the system. In addition, pressure drops on the air and water sides directly affect fan and pump selections.
The Importance of Maintenance and Cleaning
Cooling coils can become covered with dust, dirt, and biological deposits (bacteria, mold) over time. A dirty coil insulates the heat transfer surface, significantly reducing cooling efficiency. This causes the chiller unit or compressor to work harder, increasing energy consumption and shortening the system's lifespan.
Regular periodic maintenance, cleaning the coil surfaces with appropriate chemicals, and checking the drain lines ensure that the system operates with its day-one performance.
