R-134a (1,1,1,2-Tetrafluoroethane) is a hydrofluorocarbon (HFC)-based refrigerant with a wide range of applications in the HVAC industry. It was developed in the early 1990s to replace the chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) that damage the ozone layer, and it took the place of the R-12 refrigerant.
