How Do Chiller Systems Work?
The working principle of chiller systems is based on the fundamental rules of thermodynamics. The system operates on the principle of a refrigerant (phase-changing gas) changing state (evaporation and condensation) within a closed circuit. An ideal chiller cooling circuit consists of four main components:
- Evaporator: This is the section where the heat of the water to be cooled is transferred to the refrigerant. The refrigerant absorbs the heat and evaporates, thereby cooling the water.
- Compressor: It sucks in and compresses the low-pressure and low-temperature refrigerant vapor coming from the evaporator. The pressure and temperature of the compressed gas increase.
- Condenser: This is the part where the high-temperature and high-pressure gas from the compressor rejects its heat to the external environment (air or water) and turns into a liquid state (condenses).
- Expansion Valve: It reduces the pressure of the high-pressure liquid refrigerant, allowing it to enter the evaporator. This makes the fluid ready to evaporate again.
