What is an Air-Cooled Chiller?

In industrial production processes and large-scale commercial buildings, keeping the environment or process at the ideal temperature is of critical importance. Air-cooled chillers are systems that cool water or a different process fluid by rejecting the heat from the refrigerant (gas) passing through them directly into the atmosphere with the help of fans. Unlike water-cooled systems, they do not require an extra cooling tower or water source to remove heat. Thanks to these features, they stand out as one of the most ideal solutions for industrial cooling in regions where water resources are limited or water costs are high.

As Aref Cooling Systems, we offer long-lasting and highly efficient engineering solutions for the process cooling needs of businesses with our air-cooled chiller units designed and manufactured in-house.

How Does an Air-Cooled Chiller Work?

The working principle of air-cooled chiller systems is a closed cooling cycle based on the fundamental rules of thermodynamics. The system consists of four main components: compressor, condenser, expansion valve, and evaporator. The process water cooling operation takes place in the following stages:

Stages of the Cooling Cycle

  1. Evaporation: The process water returning heated from the facility enters the evaporator. Here, it encounters the liquid refrigerant at low pressure and temperature. The refrigerant absorbs the heat of the water, evaporates, and cools the water to the desired temperature.
  2. Compression: The refrigerant, now in a gaseous state, is drawn into the compressor. The compressor compresses the gas, raising both its pressure and temperature to high levels.
  3. Condensation: The high-temperature and high-pressure gas is transferred to the air-cooled condenser (coil). Powerful axial fans on the condenser draw outside air across the coils, rejecting the heat of the gas into the atmosphere. The gas, losing its heat, transitions back into the liquid phase.
  4. Expansion: The high-pressure liquid refrigerant passes through the expansion valve, suddenly losing pressure. The fluid, with its pressure and temperature dropped, returns to the evaporator to restart the cycle.

Advantages of Air-Cooled Chiller Systems

There are many operational and economic reasons behind industrial facilities preferring air-cooled chillers. The main advantages they provide to businesses are:

  • No Water Consumption: Since a cooling tower is not needed, water consumption is zero. This reduces water costs and offers an environmentally friendly approach.
  • Low Installation Cost: Because they do not require extra pumps, water towers, and complex piping systems, initial investment and installation costs are more affordable compared to water-cooled systems.
  • Easy Maintenance and Operation: Problems such as calcification, algae growth, or Legionella virus caused by water towers do not occur. Maintenance periods are shorter and costs are lower.
  • Flexible Installation Options: As they are generally placed on building roofs, open areas, or outside the facility, they save valuable production or storage space indoors.
  • Fast Commissioning: Since they are manufactured as packaged systems, making only the electrical and water connections on-site is sufficient for the system to operate.

Industrial Application Areas

Air-cooled chiller units are used in almost every sector requiring precise temperature control. The units we manufacture at Aref Cooling cater to a wide industrial spectrum:

  • Plastic and Rubber Industry: Rapid cooling of molds in injection, extrusion, and blow molding machines directly increases production speed and product quality.
  • Food and Beverage Industry: Used to maintain process temperatures in milk pasteurization, chocolate production, fruit juice, and carbonated beverage facilities.
  • Metalworking and Machinery: Critical for preventing overheating of laser cutting machines, CNC machines, and welding equipment.
  • Pharmaceuticals and Chemicals: Provides precise temperature values in cooling reaction vessels and air conditioning laboratory environments.
  • HVAC Applications: Preferred for comfort and system cooling in hospitals, shopping malls, hotels, and large data centers.

Air-Cooled vs. Water-Cooled Chiller Comparison

When choosing the right chiller system for your business, it is important to know the differences between air-cooled and water-cooled systems. Water-cooled chiller systems require a water tower to reject heat. While this allows the system to be installed indoors (in a mechanical room), it necessitates the construction of a tower outside. Although water-cooled systems provide energy efficiency at very high capacities, they create extra operating expenses such as water costs, tower maintenance, and water treatment chemicals.

Air-cooled chiller systems, on the other hand, are installed outdoors. There are no tower and water treatment costs. Thanks to advancements in today's compressor and fan technologies, air-cooled systems have also reached extremely high efficiency values (COP/EER). Especially in regions where access to water resources is difficult or water is expensive, air-cooled systems are unrivaled.
